Celebrate ten years of the euro with the Eurocompetition!
Author: Johanna Snellman
The Eurocompetition (www.eurocompetition.net), an online poster design competition for school children between 10 and 14 years of age living in the euro area and Slovakia to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the European Union's Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) and the euro, is now open!
The project is being managed by European Schoolnet (www.eun.org) on behalf of the European Commission’s Directorate General for Economic and Financial Affairs (http://ec.europa.eu/economy_finance).
Young people from the euro area and Slovakia are invited to join in the euro's 10-year celebrations by designing a poster on the theme "10 years of EMU and the euro" and uploading it to the online gallery at www.eurocompetition.net.
The posters should express the participants’ thoughts on what the euro has done for European citizens, what the benefits of the monetary union are and what they think the future holds for the single currency.
Visitors to the Eurocompetition website can also receive the Euro Kid’s Corner poster, a promotional poster available in the 12 languages of the euro area and Slovakia.
Growing up with the euro: how does it feel to be part of the euro generation?
This age group is the first which have had the euro for most of their lives. Many won’t remember what life was like with a whole array of national currencies, and may not realise the impact the euro has had on our daily lives and for the EU as a whole. They are therefore encouraged to discuss in class the changes which the single currency has brought about, and express their ideas in the form of a poster.
Learning what the euro is and what it has achieved
The Eurocompetition website (www.eurocompetition.net) provides materials for teachers to connect their history, geography or even language lessons with the euro, EMU and the economics underlying it.
The competition is expected to stimulate debate about the euro within the classroom, and with parents and peers. The debates should raise awareness of the changes the euro has triggered in our daily life, and also encourage thinking about the benefits of a single currency.
How does it work?
When pupils have created their posters, they need to be converted into a digital format (jpg or gif) and uploaded using the online submission tool. All the posters will be displayed in the website gallery, where they are shared with visitors from across Europe.
The competition is open from 15 September until 31 December 2008. An expert jury will select 16 national winners, who will each be awarded with a digital camera and the chance to have their poster printed and displayed by the European Commission at an exhibition in Brussels. From these 16 an overall winner will be selected. A special prize – yet to be unveiled – will be awarded.
