1,000 schools register for Spring Day 2006
Author: EUN

On 12 December 2005, 1st TEE School from Volos in Greece became the 1000th school to register for Spring Day 2006. Schools have been signing up at a rate of more than 50 per day since registration opened on 23 November. Future EU members are particularly engaged. Romania leads the way, with 357 schools registered, and Turkey is represented by 141 schools.

Spring Day in Europe coordinator Brigitte Parry said, "We are delighted to see such a quick response from so many countries. The debate on the future of Europe is open to schools and we are happy to give so many young people a chance to make their voice heard.”

As in the past three years of the annual event, schools organise debates and activities to learn and debate about European issues.  Schools often invite special guests such as MEPs to join debates and hear the opinions of the EU’s younger citizens.

Last year more than 6600 schools from all 25 EU member states and beyond took part.  The focus day of the event next year will be on 21 March 2006.
