Xperimania: new deadline for the competition
Author: Johanna Snellman

Until 7 April 2008, students in secondary schools in Europe can participate in two attractive competitions in the field of materials and petrochemistry on the Xperimania web site (www.xperimania.net). Teachers and students can either set up an easy and fun experiment in science to investigate the properties of materials, or explore a scientific discovery in the field of materials from 1800 to the present day. The best entries will be awarded with a media player and a trip to Brussels!

Xperimania offers teachers a wide range of materials and hands-on activities for science teaching and learning. Through participating in the activities and using the resources on the web site students and teachers will learn about the various applications of materials and petrochemistry and their role in the evolution of many day-to-day items.

The Xperimania project is coordinated by European Schoolnet on behalf of Appe, the Association of Petrochemicals Producers in Europe. For any questions about the project, its activities and competitions send an email to: xperimania at eun.org.

About European Schoolnet

European Schoolnet (www.europeanschoolnet.org) is a unique not-for-profit consortium of 31 ministries of education in Europe created in 1997. EUN provides major European education portals for teaching, learning and collaboration and leads the way in bringing about change in schooling through the use of new technology.

About Xperimania

European Schoolnet and the Association of Petrochemicals Producers in Europe (Appe) are launching an ambitious new project to raise awareness of petrochemistry among young people across Europe. The project - Xperimania - proposes attractive inquiry-based science teaching and learning activities for upper primary and secondary schools.

Through the project, students will gain knowledge of petrochemical discoveries, processes and products. The campaign includes a competition for teams of young people around Europe, to set up an easy and fun experiment and upload lab reports on the website (www.xperimania.net). Winning students will be invited to a ceremony taking place in the Benelux region during 2008, at a research laboratory of one of the Appe member companies.
