New tools to share best practices on the STELLA web portal
Author: EUN News

STELLA, a European project to improve science education in Europe by sharing ideas on teaching methods and best practices, had its third meeting on 24-25 November 2008 on the Portuguese Island of Madeira. The meeting focused on the new developments of the STELLA web portal, which now includes forums for teachers. A new section with various multimedia tools to support the work of teachers and school classes in science education projects was also launched on 10 December 2008.

STELLA project is funded with support from the European Commission within the Lifelong Learning Programme. It aims to improve the science education in Europe by inspiring teachers’ and experts’ communication and exchange of ideas on teaching methods and best practices.

The forums are places for teachers, teacher trainers, experts and everyone interested in science education to communicate with each other and with the STELLA team. The topics, science education and interesting practice, are discussed both at national level (national forums for Bulgaria, Portugal, Italy, Germany and France) and across countries (European forums).

The multimedia tools include a number of tools and mini-units developed to give suggestions to teachers on the use of different applications like Powerpoint, Blog, Video, Discussion Forum, eTwinning, and Web 2.0 applications like YouTube, Wikipedia, Flickr, Myspace, Del.icio.us. The objective is to support the work of teachers and school classes in science education projects and promote the divulgation of project practices and results.

Through the STELLA online catalogue, the documentation produced is published and shared with colleagues all over Europe.

Furthermore the STELLA meeting discussed the enrichment of the online catalogue and the development of the pool of good practices. Through the online catalogue on the STELLA portal, teachers from across Europe can submit a questionnaire on their initiatives, together with multimedia tools realised in schools, and have a look of what is done in other countries. The Pool of good practices at the moment includes some case studies realised within the former Socrates GRID project.
