Blog around the globe with Safer Internet Day
Author: EUN News

On 6 February 2007, European Schoolnet, coordinator of Insafe, the European safer internet network (www.saferinternet.org), successfully organized the fourth Safer Internet Day 2007 (SID). A global digital event, the SID blogathon, highlighted the celebrations of the fourth edition of the event in 43 countries. It was the second year the blogathon was organised. The twenty-six nodes of the network and organizations across the world conducted a great variety of national, international and local events.

The worldwide blogathon reached Australia on the morning of 6th February and progressed westward through the day to finish up in the USA and Canada. This year the blogathon went one step further to include the voices of hundreds of youngsters, in the framework of a competition launched in October 2006. More than 200 schools in 25 countries across the globe worked in pairs, using technology to cross geographical borders and create internet safety awareness material on one of three themes: e-privacy, netiquette, and power of image. Information Society and Media Commissioner Mrs. Viviane Reding opened the blog with the announcement of the 4 winning teams in the competition: from Poland, Greece, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom and the United States.

At the same time, the blogathon served as a podium for more than a hundred organisations and representatives of the telecommunications industry to express their interest and commitment in making online technologies safer and empowering users. The creations of the young competition participants as well as the postings of organised civil society, industry and Insafe awareness nodes underline the need for digitally aware citizens and decision-makers:

In yet another step towards better understanding young people’s use of the internet and mobile phones, Insafe collected data through an online survey. Preliminary results were made available on Safer Internet Day. More detailed information is available at:
