Safer Internet Day 2007 Competition winners announced
Author: EUN News
Viviane Reding, Commissioner for Information Society and Media announced on 6 February 2007 the results of the Safer Internet Day competition for the award categories of e-privacy, netiquette, power of image and innovation. The competition took place in connection with Safer Internet Day 2007, schools presented their projects on the Blogathon, a global blog marathon that crossed the world from east to west on Safer Internet Day.
For three months, 200 schools worked together in partnerships on one out of the three given themes of e-privacy, netiquette or power of image to highlight bad and good communication practices. Schools had to work in trans-national pairs to create awareness materials on their chosen topic.
Each partnerships will receive 3,000 euros in kind to cater for specific ICT needs of their schools. The four prizes are sponsored by Vodafone and UPC Broadband as a token of their corporate commitment to a safe, ethical and effective use of the internet and mobiles.
The competition gave young people the incentive to reflect on how they communicate and transpose values of social interchange in the “real world” to the digital context.
The competition was organised by Insafe, the European internet safety network, coordinated by European Schoolnet, which aims to empower citizens to use the internet, as well as other information and communication technologies, safely, ethically and effectively. The network is funded by the Safer Internet plus Programme of the European Commission's Directorate General for Information Society and Media. The network consists of 26 national awareness nodes.
The Competition was launched in October 2006 by Insafe in conjunction with eTwinning, a European Commission-funded project to foster school collaboration in Europe using ICT. Schools in eTwinning had access to the Safer Internet Day competition.
The results in the four prize categories are as follows:
e-Privacy award: The Polish school Zespol Szkol Handlowo-Ekonomicznych w Bialymstoku teamed up with the Bulgarian school PGGPT "Nikola Vaptsarov" to carry off the e-privacy award with an entry entitled "Modern communication tools - for and against our privacy".
The project carried out a court debate to judge whether or not modern communications endanger our privacy. In the two schools in Poland and Bulgaria, the students formed five groups including the defendants (internet, mobile phones, tcommunicators), the prosecutors, the barristers and judges. Secretaries in both schools gave the account of the debates.
The verdict given by the Polish school was that communication tools can damage our privacy if we don’t use them in a proper way. The Bulgarian court/school's conclusion focused on spam and how important it is to be protected against it by never answering to unsolicited mail and to use spam filters.
A summary of the discussion is available in a PowerPoint presentation: http://blog.eun.org/SID2007/upload/Reports.ppt

Netiquette award: The Greek school Athens College worked together with the Czech school ZS TGM Mnichovice on a project transposing traditional values into the cyberworld in the prize-winning "e-values".
The two classes initially met through eTwinning. Their idea was to integrate ICT and English, working on a project called “e-values”. The main goal for the students was to understand that communication on internet can be good or bad depending on the way it is used. The two schools produced a video featuring forest animals surfing on the internet and dealing with its dangers.

Power of Images award: the Polish school Gimnazjum Nr 6 w Żorach, together with their Greek counterpart, the Primary School of Panagia Thassos, elaborated their winning project on "The picture as the vehicle of bad and good news".
The two schools presented stories illustrating the dangers hidden in messages and images. The stories show the pitfalls of the internet such as genuine-looking sites asking for credit card details, and
getting lost in the internet ‘maze’.

Innovation award: Semley Primary School from the United Kingdom and the Athens-Chilesburg Elementary School from the United States were selected as the most innovative entry for the project entitled "The Power of Image".
In their project the two young teams showed how it is possible to manipulate images and questioned whether pictures always tell the truth. As images can be manipulated or put in a different context than the original one, the pupils from the two schools stressed the question ‘can publishing an image be hurtful?’ . This is a particularly pertinent question in a technological context where the process of publishing has been greatly facilitated by the use of digital cameras and camera phones.
