European Schoolnet presents Learning Resource Exchange to peers in Hungary
Author: EUN News
European Schoolnet gave a presentation in the Commission's Peer Learning Activity (PLA) in Budapest on 25-27 April 2007. The PLA group, set up in the framework of the European Commission’s ICT cluster, gained in-depth knowledge about Hungarian
school system and its emerging issues with the ICT. The EUN expert gave an input for the latter from the European perspective, outlining the Learning Resources Exchange initiative put out by the European Schoolnet.
Hungary, a country of about 10 million inhabitants, has had some major e-learning initiatives to boost the ICT literacy and skills in education. For example 96 per cent of secondary schools have broadband access to the Internet, 1,100 grammar schools are equipped with a mobile trolley containing digital presentation equipment, and the government has given normative support for the development of electronic administration systems in schools. The Hungarian ENIS innovative school programme contains 30 participating schools nominated by the Ministry. The group also had a chance to visit a Hungarian school.
The second main focus of the PLA was on the educational content, the groups gained insights into Hungarian situation with digital learning resources and school book publishers. The Sulinet Digital Knowledge Base, which contains almost a million searchable and re-usable learning objects with educational planning ideas and tools, was presented. A step further into the content sharing and reuse at the European level is the EUN-led initiative to build a learning resource exchange, the European Schoolnet expert explained the idea behind the Learning Resources Exchange and how EUN, through this initiative, is also taking on the challenges of the so-called Web 2.0 phenomenon.
EUN, for example, has build in more support for the teacher-created learning content through the Creative Commons licencing scheme and is currently implementing a social tagging tool for teachers to use when accessing the content through the LRE portal which will be made available and public in 2007.
