MELT Summer school in Tampere
Author: EUN News
About seventy teachers from different European countries came to Tampere, Finland, on 7-8 June 2007 for a two-day summer school on the use of collaborative tagging and bookmarking methods for learning resources. The summer school was organised as part of the MELT project that looks into "metadata ecology", which is how user-given tags with more structured metadata can help the discovery of suitable learning resources across Europe.
During the workshop pilot teachers from Finland, Hungary, Flanders (Belgium) and Austria looked at different ideas on the use of social software for learning purposes. Especially the teachers studied how social networking can be supported by these new technologies.
Later this year, these teachers will start using the MELT portal, which allows them to make social bookmarks (called favourites in the project) on the digital learning resources and share them easily through social networks and tags with other people.
The MELT portal will help the final creation of Learning Resources Exchange, a public portal for all teachers in Europe (expected in 2008), to access digital learning resources across the language and national boarders in Europe and beyond.
