Children pose questions on the science of fashion
Author: EUN News
What’s the link between fashion and science? Children taking part in the first Xperimania chat for schools, held on 25 October 2007, got the chance to explore the topic with an expert guest. Children from schools in 10 countries posed their questions to an invited expert, Dr. Susannah Hadley. The topic of the discussion was “Fashion: how nylon and modern artificial fabrics came into our lives”.
The chat was organised in the context of the Xperimania project, a campaign to raise interest in chemistry and materials science. The invited expert, Dr. Susannah Hadley, is a freelance consultant with experience in major companies like Max Mara and L'Oréal. She responded to all students’ questions. More than 25 queries arouse in an hour. The online discussion continued longer than planned because of the great enthusiasm of pupils who kept on asking more questions!
The results of the first Xperimania chat for schools were very positive, with many schools writing in after the event to thank the organisers for setting up the chat. The Xperimania team will be working on developing other interesting events for young people curious about chemistry, materials and petrochemistry.
The initiative is part of the project launched by the European Schoolnet and the Association of Petrochemicals Producers in Europe. It aims to raise the awareness of petrochemistry among your people across Europe. The overall project targets students from upper primary and secondary schools and offers them to gain knowledge though attractive inquiry-based science teaching and learning activities.
