Author: EUN News

On 7 November 2005, the Xplora portal hosted the first in a series of chats with leading scientists and innovation experts. Ray Kurzweil, one of most far-sighted thinkers in the field of artificial intelligence, was the Xplora chat guest: Xplora (www.xplora.org) is the gateway to science education in Europe supported by the European Commission’s DG Research.

Ray Kurzweil is a pioneer in many fields. He invented the first optical character recognition machine, which uses software to translate images containing text into typewritten text. He also made the first digital scanner and together with pop artist, Stevie Wonder, he created the first music synthesizer and has also worked in the areas of speech recognition and voice synthesis.

Participants from the United States, Europe and Australia participated in the chat which started at 3pm in Brussels. One participant from Tasmania reported that it was 1am in Australia. The chat lasted one hour, and covered artificial intelligence and robotics. They also discussed interesting thoughts and insight into the future of our societies. An inspiring outcome of the chat was that Ray Kurzweil did not fail to give estimates on the date when things are expected to happen.

After Ray Kurzweil introduced himself and his work, participants were invited to ask questions on computers, robots, artificial intelligence and more.

Although the chat started with the topic of artificial intelligence, after a short time the discussion moved into biology, and how biology and computer science merge together, giving participants of this chat the privilege to get in touch with tomorrow.
