Commissioner Figel’ visits European Schoolnet

Commissioner Ján Figel' responsible for education, training, culture and multilingualism visited the EUN Office on 10 February to chat with schools all over Europe. The chat was organised as part of Spring Day in Europe and followed a similar chat on 31 January 2005 involving the Research Commissioner Janez Potočnik.

The chats are a great way to connect decision-makers to pupils and to get them interested in EU matters. This year European Schoolnet has scheduled seven chats with key European leaders, most of them taking place at the EUN offices.

On 10 February, twelve schools were on-line with Commissioner Ján Figel’ (pictured) to chat about the future of the European education. The participating schools started to prepare the chat earlier before, by discussing the topic, formulating and selecting the questions.

Tiina Kähärä, their teacher, told EUN: “My students really enjoyed it, as Commissioner Figel’ himself answered their questions. This was a great opportunity for them to get closer to the EU, by getting a little bit of personal touch.”

Another class from Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria booked an Internet café to be able to chat as the school does not have access to the Internet.

Other successful chats organised by European Schoolnet featured Janez Potočnik (pictured right with Jana Kratochvílová of Commissioner Potočnik Cabinet), Commissioner for Science and Research who chatted with classes from ten European countries and answered question about the future of European Science and Research. This chat took place on 31 January 2005.
