The new portal aims at becoming a reference point for news, information and resources related to Internet safety. It is the hub of the Insafe network, which is made up of 16 national Internet safety awareness nodes.
Insafe nodes were among a total of 30 countries and 65 organisations that participated in Safer Internet Day in 2005. Events held in Europe and as far afield as Singapore and Australia.
Safer Internet Day enjoyed extensive media coverage. Featured events included the Icelandic Minister of Education’s presence at the launch of a new Internet safety package and a press conference at the Russian Duma.
All Safer Internet Day activities were held under the patronage of Viviane Reding, European Commissioner for Information Society and Media. In a statement of support, she expressed her hope that it would become an annual event.
Viviane Reding is also the patron of Insafe’s story-telling competition which was launched in 19 countries on Safer Internet Day.
Insafe is mandated by the European Commission to raise Internet safety awareness in Europe. The network is growing, having expanded to 16 from the 10 original members in October 2004. A further five countries are currently in negotiating to join.
