SchoolPlaza helps teachers communicate across borders
Author: EUN News

The EUN SchoolPlaza is to be launched. It is a hub for social and professional communication among teachers. SchoolPlaza is an EUN project to connect teachers in Europe who share similar interests or teach the same subjects. For this project, EUN developed a new backend that it will also use for other EUN collaborative environments such as eTwinning, Pencil and EUN communities.

The SchoolPlaza is a meeting place with a strong social and communicative emphasis for teachers in Europe. The design is guided by the concept of individuals and small social groups constructing things for one another, collaboratively creating and sharing information and artifacts (such as pictures) as they interact with each other within the platform.

The full version launch will be in two phases. In May, most of the features to help teachers meet and exchange on the online platform will be available, in the autumn, a second version will offer audio facilities such as a radio station and audio conferencing.

In the version 2.0, the SchoolPlaza will bring together individuals who share similar interests, teach the same subjects and work with children of the same age and offers mechanisms to find each other. Tools will be provided to communicate and collaborate with colleagues in an open manner, for example notice boards will allow members to post their ideas and requests, ask for project partners or simply chat with colleagues.

Out of these "loose" encounters more serious plans for projects or collaboration might evolve. For that purpose members will be able to branch out into private communities in which other colleagues can be invited, topics be discussed, documents shared and archived and parts be published on the web and made accessible to everyone in the Plaza. For members who decide to work together on creating online courses or offer online courses to colleagues and students, the SchoolPlaza will offers a second exit into a virtual learning environment where courses can be created, published and offered to others. These two "branches" are going to be implemented at a later stage.
