EYE: Study on Environment for Young Europeans
EYE was a 9-month project to review the website “Environment for Young Europeans” of the DG Environment of the European Commission. The task was conducted by an external contractor, Gellis Communications, and European Schoolnet as a subcontractor. As part of the evaluation process, a study was carried out on the opinions and usage of the environmental youth websites of selected countries amongst young people aged between 6 to 16 years old.
The objective The objective was to provide the DG environment with strategic recommendations for the future of their website. The recommendations were based on the external contractor’s and European Schoolnet’s expert knowledge on online communications, on desk research, and on the findings resulting from comprehensive study conducted in ten EU Member States (Denmark, Lithuania, Italy, Spain, Slovenia, Romania, Poland, Belgium, Germany and Czech Republic), surveying some 10 school teachers and 100 youths per country.
The Expert Audit The first task undertaken was an in-depth analysis (Expert Audit) of the current website Environment for Young Europeans. Gellis Communications carried out part of this evaluation in cooperation with European Schoolnet. The output of this first task provided preliminary conclusions about the strengths and weaknesses of the website.
The Expert Audit included a desk research with identification and analysis of background materials, an Expert Panel Meeting, and an online survey and face-to-face interviews with teachers and students in the target countries to analyse the level of relevance and user-friendliness of the website. European Schoolnet provided also an Expert Group to evaluate the website and review the preliminary findings of the online survey.
The online survey and the interviews were carried out in the target countries in support of ten national coordinators, who were trained by European Schoolnet. The realization of the online survey was based on European Schoolnet’s existing survey tools.
Re-testing phase Based on the findings of the Expert Audit, a re-testing phase was conducted. This included a new online survey and interviews with the students and teachers in the target countries. Almost 600 students and 500 teachers took part in the retesting, which formed the base for the final conclusions.
The results As a result, the external contractor, in co-operation with European Schoolnet, provides a document of recommendations for the future development of the “Environment of Young Europeans” website of the DG environment of the European Commission.
