Valnet: Validation Network of School of Tomorrow Projects
Author: Roger Blamire

The European Schoolnet Validation Network (EUN ValNet) was an accompanying measure funded by the IST programme to facilitate building knowledge about innovation in schools and help create the conditions for creating schools of tomorrow. The project ran for 41 months and ended in August 2004.

Two preliminary underpinning studies, THINKand NOW identified key issues facing policy makers and developed future scenarios for the public education service. Valnet produced a homogeneous validation methodology for ICT school pilots focusing on five core dimensions: Pedagogical, Organisational, Economic, Technical and Cultural (POETiC) and set up an integrated infrastructure for validating and demonstrating products and services arising from IST projects relevant to the schools sector.

The core activity was to validate at least five Schools of Tomorrow projects using a framework methodology in selected schools across Europe, to cluster and animate projects and to consolidate and disseminate results. The five School of Tomorrow projects that were selected were 5D, ITALES, ITCOLE, Lab of Tomorrow and Seed. The validations undertaken involved at least 16 European countries, 200 schools, 565 teachers, 5649 students and 153 members of the community, academics, teacher trainers or experts.

The Consolidated report brought together the findings from the five validated projects and the seven other School of Tomorrow projects, presenting them within the Valnet POETiC framework.
